"Common Flicker"

The Common Flicker is a welcome and appreciated site in the spring and often visits my back yard looking for a meal.  This bird is usually sited feeding on the ground around old stumps and dead logs.  It will hammer a tree loudly as a mating call.

"Tree Swallow"

Watercolor on high density watercolor paper - a single Swallow sits on a branch.  The shimmering head and golden breast color of this wonderful little bird is stunning and I tried to capture these colors and tones in this painting.

Swallows are a terrific bird to have around due to their very large appetite for mosquitoes.

"Clarke's Nutcracker"

This beautiful gray, white and black bird is native to the West Coast.  It reminds me of the eastern Gray Jay and their particular friendliness.  The snow is softly falling around this beautiful creature.

"Penguin Pair & Chick"

A pair of Emperor Penguins with their chick, these magnificent birds have become a marvel to us as they live in one of the harshest climates on our planet.  Their rearing of the chicks is amazing as the father incubates the egg while the mother goes off on a long march for food and returns to nourish both chick and mate and exchange the chick so that the father can leave to replenish himself after a long period of nurturing the egg and protecting the chick from the cold.

"Chickadee in the Snow"

Acrylic on Board - A common and beautiful site, as is it's song. 

These little birds are a great addition to any garden as they help eliminate garden pests.  Their voice is a very soothing chicka de de de.  They are very friendly little birds and will eat from your hand if you're patient enough to stand still with some out-stretched sunflower seeds in your hand - a favorite food of this little bird.
